Hypernephroma metastases demonstrated by pelvic angiography. Acta Chir. Scandinav. 114:46:1957. Bergfeit, G.: Fall av ulcerös kolit med fullständig sårruptur

The median age at presentation was 61 years (range, 34 to 82). Nineteen patients had a single lesion metastatic to the brain, and 16 of these lesions were supratentorial. Despite the fact that there is nothing new to present on the subject of metastasis in hypernephroma, nevertheless it seems worth while that a modest review be made of the wide-spread nature of such metastases in order to draw attention to possible errors in diagnosis and treatment. Metastatic hypernephroma has been notoriously resistant to control by conventional methods of therapy. A review of 72 patients treated by various methods revealed that patients in whom metastases recurred 18 months or longer after initial diagnosis had a median survival of almost 15 months; those patients in whom metastases recurred less than 18 months after diagnosis had a median survival of about 8 months. The renal cell carcinoma (formerly hypernephroma) comprises approx. 85% of all malignant kidney tumors.

Rusche (1953) observed hypernephroma in 2 brothers. Both had distant metastasis as the first manifestation and both were in their early thirties at the time of diagnosis. Brinton (1960) described a family in which 2 brothers and a sister had hypernephroma. The father had died of kidney tumor and the mother of cancer, site unstated.

Other forms are the urothelium carcinoma originating from the renal pelvis (10 %), non-Hodgkin lymphomas, sarcomas, and the nephroblastomas occurring in childhood (Wilms' tumor). A consecutive series of 95 patients with hypernephroma was studied retrospectively after it was clinically suspected that there was a propensity for this tumor to metastasize to the scapula. Fifteen patients (15.8%) have developed scapular metastases which account for 36.6% of all bone metastases in this series, the majority of which required spread metastases to the mediastinal lymph nodes, left lung, liver and left kidney with secondary deposits within the sites of the metastatic hypernephroma. A review of the literature is presented and indicates that in most of the reported cases an instance in which both malignancies display widespread A case of hypernephroma (renal‐cell carcinoma) with oral metastasis is presented.
