Gohatto is a beautiful film. The production design, lighting and cinematography combine to fill the screen with shots you want to freeze-frame and admire, while Ryuchi Sakamoto's glacial score adds a light frosting to the confection.

Gohatto is a romantic tale of love between samurai warriors, and given the fact that Oshima, 68, has said of himself "I break taboos, and I'm interested in people and actors who break taboos", this samurai film is unlike anything that has ever proceeded it. Nagisa Oshima's "Taboo" tells a story set in the late Japanese samurai period of the 1800s, when a youth of unusual beauty is admitted into a training program for warriors, stirring lust among his comrades and even a superior officer. When the film premiered at Cannes in May 2000, the joke was that it would be retitled "Not to Ask, Not to Tell." review: A deft and engaging history of Japanese film years brought him sufficiently back to health to make what would become his last film, "Gohatto," in 1999.

"Gohatto" ("Taboo") is a fascinating film about the danger of beauty : to sum it up, a young "ephebe"'s ethereal beauty spreads like a plague, infecting a whole company of iron hard men in the process. As you must know by now, Oshima tackles in this film the forbidden subject of homosexuality among Samurais. GOHATTO FULL MOVIE ENG SUB. Gohatto is a tragedy of doomed gay love, and while it's not my favorite approach to the subject, I'm also a bit of a miserabilist.
