The Bavarian dialect, with its many local variations, is spoken in the areas south of the Danube River and east of the Lech River and throughout all of Austria, except in the state of Vorarlberg, which is Swabian in origin. Bavarian or Austro-Bavarian (German: Bairisch, Austro-Bavarian: Boarisch) is a major group of Upper German varieties. They are called "upper" because they are spoken in Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany, which are mountainous. The dialect is used in the mountain-adjacent regions of Austria, Italy and Switzerland, though spelling and pronunciation vary. Bavaria is a culture-rich, southern state of Germany that’s often viewed as home to the stereotypical German culture.
